Book Review

Happy, Healthy, Vegan Kids

by Tracie DeMotte, Tierra Carlson, and Tasha Carlson
Review by Cathe Olson
Raising Vegan Children in a Non-Vegan World

Veganism isn't just for adults, but for kids too! Happy, Healthy, Vegan Kids explains why vegans eat the way they do with a clear, straightforward message explaining that vegans care about animals and how they are treated. The book is short but makes its point without a lot of words. Really, it's the perfect length for kids ages 6 to 12 years old. Children will learn about the treatment of cows, turkeys, pigs, chickens, sheep, and bees and get suggestions for alternatives to eating them or their products. There are lots of photographs of farm animals in happy situations that will appeal to children. The book also includes recipes for kid-friendly vegan treats like the "Fruity Tuti Smoothie," "Gobble, Gobble, Tofurkey BLT," and "Chic, Chic, Chocolate Cake." Gluten-free options are given for all recipes. The only caveat I would mention is that the cost of the picture book seems a bit pricey for a 26-page paperback.
