![]() True Stores About Saving AnimalsA series written and illustrated by Samuel LopezReview by Cathe Olson Samuel and Cheri Lopez founded Compassionate Pet Sanctuary as a haven for lost, abandoned, and injured animals. The True Stories About Saving Animals series are stories about some of the animals that have spent time on their farm. The books are 20-page paperback picture books written and illustrated by Samuel Lopez. Children will be charmed by these sad and sweet stories of hurt and abandoned animals that are cared for by this caring and patient couple. The books contain colorful illustrations, as well as photographs of the actual animals. Following are brief synopses of the books I reviewed. The Three-Legged Kitten is the story of a kitten who is struck by a car driven recklessly on a country road. The kitten takes refuge in a nearby junkyard where he is discovered by the Lopez's nephew Mossy. Though the kitten loses a leg because of the accident, he recovers completely and is able to do anything a four-legged cat can do and is eventually adopted into a happy home. Our Orphaned Owls is the story of owlets whose mother disappears after a violent spring storm. The father, unable to care for babies, abandons them as well. Samuel and Cheri raise the owls until they are able to survive in the wild on their own. The Miracle of the Little Kitten is about a kitten found almost dead by the Lopez?s dog Stinky Little Scroungy. The couple nurses the kitten back to good health and the kitten is adopted. Stinky Little Scroungy is about an abandoned dog found by nephew Mossy and nursed back to health by the Cheri. The dog becomes a permanent member of the farm family. My favorites were The Three-Legged Kitten and Our Orphaned Owls--mainly I think because the stories were so unusual and original. The other stories were similar to ones I have heard before but were, nevertheless, still sweet and touching. Children from preschool age through elementary school will enjoy these stories and be inspired to be kind and compassionate toward animals.
