Book Review

Vegetarian Walt Disney World and Greater Orlando
by Susan Shumaker and Than Saffel
Review by Bonnie Barker

Vegetarian Walt Disney WorldBilled as the essential guide for the diet-conscious traveler, this book delivers. It is basically a review of area restaurants, inns, and local markets throughout Orlando, and also includes the Disney Cruise Line and the Universal Orlando theme park. Shumaker and Saffel have packed in oodles of eatery information for veggie travelers, but take note that this guidebook does not discuss rides and attractions.

Each chapter begins with an overview map and at-a-glance grids highlighting the best of the best in veg*an fare. They show about how much you'll pay for a meal, differentiate between vegan and lacto/ovo selections, and caution about those places where you'll need to call ahead. What follows is a detailed review of each restaurant with specific meal recommendations, sample itineraries, and special suggestions for kid-friendly meals and healthful snacks. Interesting food facts and profiles of individual chefs are scattered throughout the book.

If you will be visiting Orlando, you need to get this book! I found it extremely valuable for planning my family vacation to WDW. I look forward to seeing guidebooks for new destinations from Vegetarian World Guides.
