Protect the Planet and Animals on "Tofurky Tuesdays"

TofurkyŽ, one of the most popular meat alternatives, and The Humane Society of the United States are teaming up on a new project. They're promoting "Tofurky Tuesdays" as a fun way to reduce our impact on global warming, while enjoying delicious humane foods.

The HSUS is encouraging its members and supporters to forego meat in favor of meat alternatives such as Tofurky products on Tuesdays as a way to help animals, the environment, and their health.

"Consumers can look forward to Tuesdays as great opportunities," said Paul Shapiro, senior director of The HSUS' factory farming campaign. "By reducing the amount of animal products we consume, we help fight global warming and reduce the suffering of farm animals."

Seth Tibbott, CEO of Oregon-based Turtle Island Foods, the maker of Tofurky brand products, said, "We're proud to be working with The Humane Society of the United States to tackle global warming. The United Nations has pointed out that animal agriculture is a greater global warming culprit than automobiles. Savoring meat-free meals each Tuesday is a great way to prevent the inhumane treatment of animals and protect the planet."

The HSUS has licensed the use of its logo on Turtle Island Food's full line of all-vegetarian products roasts, franks, sausages, tempeh burgers, jerky and more. TofurkyŽ periodically offers recipes and cooking tips at humanesociety.org/recipes. Turtle Island Foods will also be promoting this project at www.tofurky.com

Facts
  • Each year, U.S. factory farms raise and kill more than nine billion farm animals. These massive operations pollute our environment, and raising animals for food contributes to global warming at least as much as automobiles, according to the United Nations.

  • A comprehensive, two-year study released by the independent and prestigious Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production concluded that factory farms pose "unacceptable risks to public health, the environment and animal welfare."

  • Farm animals often endure lives filled with suffering, and they are often unprotected from even the worst slaughter abuses.

  • In its efforts to combat the worst factory farming abuses, The HSUS encourages the Three Rs: reduce the consumption of animal products, refine the methods of animal production to eliminate the most inhumane practices, and replace animal products with meat-free alternatives.
