Why Did You Go Vegan?

Amanda

I never thought that I would even be vegetarian. My family never really ate red meat when I was growing up, just a lot of chicken. My favorite restaurant when I was younger was McDonalds. I loved hamburgers. Article continues below

I grew up in Oklahoma. Not that the place you grow up is an excuse for not being a certain way, but Oklahoma is very much a meat-eaters paradise. By the time I had graduated from high school, I had met a handful of vegetarians, none of them really impacting me too much. I swore I couldn't and never would be vegetarian.

Off I went to college in Richmond, VA. The amount of vegetarians/vegans I met was tremendous! After being in school there for about one year, my good friend John asked me if I had ever considered being vegetarian, and so it began...

After that day, I thought about it constantly. I realized that after living on my own, in my own apartment for a year, not once had I prepared my own meat centered meal. I rarely ate hamburgers or any fast food items with meat in them anymore. I decided to give vegetarianism a try.

I felt like a totally different person.

During the course of this time, I had met a boy named Seth and fallen in love. Seth was and still is a vegan.

This last summer I lived with Seth and he told me the reasons why he believed veganism was the right choice. I had never heard someone be so compassionate about it. I heard all the horror stories of the treatment of animals and decided that I would be vegan too.

It's about 5 months later now, and I'm doing great. I feel really good and I'm finding new things to make every day!
