Why Did You Go Vegan?

Bidisha

When I was going to school, my friend Chicho and I decided to try vegetarianism as a way of life. We were trying to support each other during mealtimes and doing pretty good. But when I went home, there was no support system and I was back to eating meat once a week, and forgot all about my vegetarianism.

A few months later, a stray dog in my neighborhood had puppies and only two finally survived. They lived under our roof and were angels. They were the sweetest things that ever happened to me. However, one morning, while they were playing with each other, a learning driver could not control his car, hit the pavement and ran them over. That loss made me feel as if I had lost my own kids. I started feeling that I was being punished for relishing the meat of slaughtered innocent animals. That day I turned vegetarian.

Two weeks later, a little puppy lost its way and landed on my doorstep. Today he is 8 years old and the light of all our lives. I guess it was God's way of rewarding me for finally thinking of other living creatures.

I have been a vegan for eight years and I am very happy with the choice I made. I don't wear anything made out of leather either. And nothing made out animal skin is allowed in our place. I have been able to convert my mom into a vegan too and she has not touched meat for more than seven years now.

I believe that all of us are children of the same God and we have no right to kill animals just to satisfy our own taste bud. I dont believe in the food pyramid. In fact, it has been researched that if every person in the world were to become a vegetarian, there will not be starvation in this planet.

Have you ever driven on a freeway and passed by a truck full of innocent cattle, their eyes so sad and full of fear? Thats when it makes me remember something that I had been told once : if we take away children from their mothers' sides, be it animals or fishes or humanes, someday our children may also be taken away from our sides.
