Why Did You Go Vegan?

I became vegetarian about 5 years ago and vegan 4 years ago. It started with a simple inquiry to an ad for an animal rights group. I'm embarrased to say I didn't know what animal rights was at the time. Duh! It's changed my life. Prior to that I always thought of myself as an animal lover (you know cats and dogs) but never realized that by eating animals I was making a false claim. I try not to be digusted when I hear a non-veggie talk about how much they love animals. They've drawn their line much too narrow-mindedly I'm afraid.

I get such a warm-fuzzy feeling when I read about other vegheads around the world. We're a small bunch but hopefully that will change (thank god for internet!). I have a 7 month old boy who I would like to raise vegan - it's a hot debate though with my husband who's a non-committal vegetarian type.

Being vegan, I feel much better. I find I rely on multivits and liquid iron to cover off for when I'm slacking off though. Pregnancy was scary - mostly because the doctors I saw were uneducated and negative about veganism. My son was born a healthy 7lbs 6oz so screw them. I wish they'd take more than 1-2 weeks in nutrition or whatever it is.

Some of the other stories I read mentioned that it was tough to get accustomed to the vegan diet and I would agree but if you can change your values first it makes it a lot easier. I don't feel left out anymore when someone passes me a piece of birthday cake or hunk of cheese, I feel sorry for them for being so ignorant and mean. Having said that, I try to make my vegan plug when I can with the hopes that one time it will click with someone. I don't "get" that, by the way, how is it that you can remind someone that they're eating a dead animal and yet it doesn't faze them? My husband watched a horrific and graphic story on Eye Witness about chicken farms and it had no impact whatsoever. How is that possible? He's not a thick-headed guy, so what gives? Is his desire for old tastes that strong? Being vegan has made me a stronger person. Sometimes it's discouraging but I'll never change and it's very comforting to know you guys are out there with me!
