Why Did You Go Vegan?JulesChoosing to become vegan was my personal protest against Monsanto introducing rBGH to dairy farmers. At the time, which was roughly eight years ago, I was living in St. Louis, Mo., the city in which Monsanto was located. Everyday, the newspaper was full of stories about the controversial rBGH. Being a new vegetarian, I had relied upon dairy products to replace the meat in my diet. Unfortunately, I realized that there wasn't much I could do to remove it from the marketplace; however, I decided that by no longer consuming dairy products, I was essentially protesting with my pocketbook.The funny thing is, I didn't become vegan for health reasons, but after a few weeks I noticed that I felt a million times better. I had suffered with arthritis in my lower back for many years (the result of having ulcerative colitis as a teenager) and after I became vegan, the stiffness and pain subsided. Amazing.
