Why Did You Go Vegan?

Kristen

I became a vegetarian two years ago at the age of 15. Now that I am almost 18, I am almost completely vegan. I openly admit that I became veg*n for the health benefits. I used to suffer from severe uncontrollable migraines.

I cut wheat, greatly reduced dairy, and eliminated meat from my diet. I began to practice yoga under the guidance of an experienced teacher. I also have reaped the benefits of stronger nails, a spring in my step, and much less illness in my life.

As I became more dedicated to my new way of life I also discovered new ethical issues that I didn't even know were issues. Examples include GMO's, factory farming, leather, and many many more.

I have encountered open hostility from teachers and students at my high school that are personally offended when I decline their offers of mountain dew or dunkin donuts. My lunches are always criticized and belittled. Luckily my mother is extremely supportive of my every need. She has gone from suspicion to acceptance.

I intend to remain on the path that I have chosen because I feel better inside and out. I do get angry at school when teachers tell me that I am rude for bringing healthy treats to class parties (since when are bagels and fruit strange?)Because I do not choose to partake in their cheese danishes. But they will never know the incredible feeling of living without sugar and the clear-headedness that it brings. I don't miss my ill health.

I cannot wait to raise my children to appreciate the better ways of living.

I start college in the fall which will bring a new set of challenges.
Wish me luck
Kristin
