Why Did You Go Vegan?

When I was growing up our family of 9 ate mostly casseroles and other mixed dishes. I think that's why it was easy to begin cooking without any meat or dairy as I grew older. Our family always had a big garden, and that made the eating of vegetables and fruits very easy and enjoyable.

I encourage everyone who has a deck, porch, window box or yard to grow some food - or at least a pot of fresh herbs! It's easy to buy or make compost and to find vegan fertilizers such as those suggested by Steve Solomon or sold by Abundant Earth or Down to Earth.

I was happy to see in this magazine the story of someone I knew. Olga has overcome probably more than most people, growing up in a right-wing household in LA and not knowing a thing about the vegan-gardening life she ended up living. My sister has moved toward the war-loving, meat-eating right, so it's good that one person I know is moving to the left. Fear can really screw with the mind.
